13.10 Saucy Salamander >> 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr

I ran a long overdue update on Ubuntu 13.10 yesterday which reminded me that Saucy Salamander is now officially defunct - best to upgrade to 14.x Trusty Tahr.  An upgrade was initiated via the native upgrade utility, over wireless, on a somewhat anemic sub-notebook, and completed start to finish in 1hr:26mn, on its own, with no intervention needed.  Really a testament to just how mature Ubuntu has become on the desktop.  All drivers (including WiFi and all-in-one WiFi printer) functioned as expected before, during, and after the upgrade completed.  Performance overall is notably improved - UI responsiveness, app launch, compute.  Both unexpected, and very welcome.

Launching XAMPP Manager from the Ubuntu desktop

Where XAMPP provides the organization and management structure around a (L)AMP stack on the Ubuntu (13.10) workstation, XAMPP Manager provides an administrative UI to managing the stack - simple and functional.

To make launching the manager more convenient, create a launcher on the desktop.

Installing XAMPP (L)AMP Stack on Ubuntu 13

I decided a long time ago that the purist's approach to installing the full WAMP/LAMP stack on my personal (home) development machine was no longer worth the effort.  There are many fantastic open solutions available that make the install and management of the stack so incredibly easy.

On Windows OS, I'm quite partial to EasyPHP - this is an outfit that has really nailed the concept of managability, whether in dev-mode or for light production..

On Linux OS, I'm partial to XAMPP, and while I wish that EasyPHP built for Linux, I find XAMPP to be a highly suitable solution overall.

Adaptation using dedicated Page entry

Unbeknownst to me until yesterday, PivotX evidently limits results on queries for entries such that the system for identifying and displaying one dedicated post as a permanent sticky (upper left summary entry in the Bold theme, otherwise known as slider position 0) failed following my 21st post.

This has been solved with a better long-term solution using a Page entry in lieu of a standard (Blog) entry.

Setup Error Upgrading to IE 8

Reposting this article from as it continues to be a high ranking search term.

I ran into a frustratingly idiotic error trying to upgrade from IE 6 to IE 8 following a reinstall of Windows XP sp3.  When attempting to upgrade Internet Explorer, the error "KB932823-v3 Setup Error - Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying" is presented for the user's amusement.

Control your cloud

I've been a Dropbox user for some time now, though not an early adopter, and not a power user - Dropbox has met my limited needs satisfactorily for its mobile apps integration, facilitating inter-device sync efficiently.  In terms of volume storage, such as for RAW photo archive, Dropbox can quickly become a costly proposition.

ownCloud is an open project aimed at those with the desire to assert direct control over their cloud storage needs and/or to enjoy the economies of self-hosting.

Fine tuning on pivotx

I've spent a fair bit of time fine tuning the site and the pivotx environment exclusive of content.  Part of this exercise involved dumping early 3,500 comments which had accumulated over the course of four week's time.  Sadly, this included legitimate comments too, but most were spam and of a magnitude that did not warrant a more careful grooming.  With controls in place now, I hope not to have to bulk-dump comments again in the future. ~ It's Still Just a Pig

Welcome, I do this for my own edification.  There is no distinct mission, vision, or focus – just my observations on topics that interest me. This is revision three of – the former site has been granted final pasture at:
